REFLECTION OF 4TH WEEK
Hi
there! Neón's again.
We had to search the three kind of map projections that exist: Mercator, Robinson and Azimuthal. With this, we could discover that there isn’t a single interpretation of the world and depending of how you represent it, the continents and the countries are bigger or smaller. Although in the past it was just a question of representing the Earth but nowadays, the size of the different nations are related to their political and economy importance.
On the one hand, this is a subject that matters a lot in our future jobs, because, as teachers, we have to know which one is the best to teach children geography and politics because it is the most realible representation of the world.
On the other hand, we should explain students that some sizes are distorted due to "importance" and also foster their critical thinking because they have to realize these connections by themselves in the future.
After a lot of discussions, we had chosen the Robinson’s one, because although it’s a little bit distorted on the poles, we can see all the countries at the same time and it would be easier for kids. We think that Linda told us to do this kind of work because we had to know that not everything in books and Internet are true, we have to learn to distinguish what things are good for teaching and what not.
On the scavenger hunt, we found a lot of interesting examples of gamification on schools (use games to teach). The one we chose was about global warming because we thought that it is a really actual topic because we are afraid due to the poles melting
and children must know what they have to do to mitigate this effect and preserve the nature with all the ecosystems.
About the slogan “media are not neutral”, we have checked that advertisement has a lot of tricks and lies to catch up the attention of children to buy their products. We, as future teachers, have to create a critic thought in our students, so we have to explain how an adds work because if not, they would believe that they are true. By teaching this approach they will be able to judge and evaluate not only the adds but also all the lies they find along their life. It is a crucial skill for their development because by using it they will be able to deal with fraudsters and people who wants to get any benefit from them.
